Prince Harry’s Invitation Back to the Royal Fold – But Only After His Father’s Death
The once close-knit bond between Prince Harry and his father, King Charles III, seems to have grown into a distant memory—one that echoes with family vacations, heartfelt gestures, and public displays of unity. But in a twist worthy of a Shakespearean drama, it appears that a reunion may finally be on the horizon. The catch? It will only come when the monarch has passed away.
Long gone are the days when young Harry would join Prince Charles for ski holidays, or when Charles supported his grieving sons by walking solemnly behind Princess Diana’s coffin. Even more poignant was the moment in 2018 when Charles walked Meghan Markle down the aisle on her wedding day to Harry, filling the role of a father figure.
Since then, however, relations have deteriorated dramatically—particularly after the 2020 announcement of the “Megxit,” which saw Harry and Meghan step back from royal duties and relocate to the United States. This departure alone sparked tensions, but what followed ignited nothing short of an emotional firestorm within the royal family.
The bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, where Harry and Meghan aired grievances and made startling claims about their treatment within the royal institution, sent shockwaves around the world. Then came Harry’s memoir, Spare, a raw and revealing account of his life behind palace walls. Both events left a lasting impact—and reportedly caused deep wounds within the royal family that have yet to fully heal.
Since then, Prince Harry hasn’t returned to London with Meghan Markle. The last time he visited the UK alongside his family was in 2022, for the funeral of his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. It was a sombre occasion, but even then, the frost between family members was palpable. Harry was barely acknowledged in public by either his father or his older brother, Prince William. The siblings, once seen as the unbreakable heirs of Diana’s legacy, stood together outside Balmoral with their wives—Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle—without exchanging a single word.
These four, once dubbed the “Fab Four” by British tabloids in a nod to The Beatles, have not functioned as a united front in years.

Now, with King Charles III battling cancer and aged 76, thoughts have turned—however grimly—to his eventual passing. And in planning his own funeral, the monarch has extended something of an olive branch to his estranged son.
According to The Telegraph, Charles has made it known that he wants Harry to play a “prominent role” in the service. Perhaps more significantly, he has instructed that his two sons should walk “side by side” through the streets of London in a show of unity and respect—an echo of the solemn procession they undertook for their mother, Princess Diana.
This decision appears to be a symbolic gesture, aimed at healing old wounds—or at the very least, presenting a unified royal image to the world during a period of national mourning. And while such a moment could mark a significant step toward reconciliation, it is steeped in sadness. That this reunion is set to happen only after Charles’s death highlights just how deep the rift within the family has become.
As for Meghan Markle, often seen as the lightning rod of royal controversy, she too has been extended an invitation to participate in the events following the King’s passing. She and Harry, referred to by their formal titles as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, are expected to join the family at the vigil in Westminster and take part in key aspects of the funeral, standing alongside the more senior royals.

Even their children, Archie and Lilibet—rarely seen on British soil—are reportedly welcome to attend both the service at Westminster Abbey and the private gathering at St George’s Chapel in Windsor, should they wish to do so.
This invitation may seem like a small step forward, but its significance cannot be understated. It is the first real sign in years that Harry and his family might be able to rebuild bridges—albeit under the most tragic of circumstances.
Still, questions remain. Can wounds this deep truly be healed through ceremony and symbolism? Will a joint appearance at Charles’s funeral be enough to thaw the ice between Harry and William? And can Meghan Markle find a place within a royal family she once felt so alienated from?
Only time will tell. For now, what’s clear is that King Charles, even in preparing for his final farewell, is reaching out to his youngest son. Whether this gesture opens the door to a more lasting reconciliation or simply papers over cracks remains to be seen.
But for royal watchers and loyalists alike, the prospect of Harry and William walking side by side again—united in grief and duty—offers a flicker of hope that perhaps, someday, family can come before the crown.
